OT- OK to shut off diesel with load on engine?
I have a farm tractor that I use to pull the manure spreader for my wife's horse barn. I have found that the easiest way to get the spreader up tight to the ramp is to kill the engine just as the spreader is coming into position. So, the engine is under a load (a very light load) as it shuts off.
Any reason why doing it that way will cause undue wear on the engine? |

I can't imagine why it would. Load shouldn't hurt, although high RPMs might be a problem if the oil pressure drops off before the engine has stopped turning.

If it's turbocharged, it's not a good idea to shut it down at anything higher than idle.

This is non-turbo motor and I have the engine speed low before I kill the engine.
The oil pressure issue was the one that worried me. |

It has oil pressure when the engine is turning. So it will have oil pressure right up to the time the engine stops running so there should be no problem with that.

i wouldnt do that.
as the rpm drops so will the oil pressure. i would think there would be some danger of damage to the bearings as the rpm nears zero. never heard it discussed before, though. tom w

The primary damage will occure in the transmission due to windup.
It is very hard on the clutch. The engine couldn't care less. Tractor transmissions are tough as long as they are moving....the reverse gear set on most transmissions including road vehicles is the weakest gear set in the box. VW's ...the old bug and early Rabbits had a problem with staying together when people would accelerate in reverse hard. Porsche trans' are similar. The gear set teeth are usually straight, tiny, and single tooth loadings occure due to the design....loading like this is not recommeded. Cold engine starts have far longer zero oil pressure time than killing the engine by stallling...in fact ...stalling the engine shuts it off quicker than turning the key to Off. Like I said...engine couldn't care less. . .
