I've actually thought about this. Why is the '87 better?

I love my 124, but the 210 seems to be so much nicer to drive. Much more modern.

But I did have some issues since buying it...none major, just annoying. MAF sensor ($135), turbo wastegate solenoid ($115), auxilliary fan ($175) and starter relay ($25) are all electronic glitches and are common. It also developed a very small leak at the thermostat housing so I replaced that along with the T-stat ($60). None of these issues was "life threatenting".
I got a high of 33 cruising at 85. Uses very little oil as far as I can see. Fill it to the full mark and you may get slightly above the min mark after 10000.

MAF is a common problem. My 99 C280 also had to have a MAF sensor done and it was done previously.

I guess it's a matter of personal opinion. The 210 chassis just doesn't "do it" for me. Like I said, they just don't make them like they used to. The 210 felt more like driving a toyota or honda than a Mercedes.

Yep, you should see John playing with the doors of my SDL at the meets!

Did you buy that black SDL btw?

It's either Ludditism, Masochism or simple unhealthy Addiction

That keeps people in their diesel 123's. The W210 is better in every way: power, safety, comfort, reliability. Did I forget to mention that holding the unlock button on the remote lowers all the windows and opens the sunroof (oh yeah, the sunroof is also better than the Rube Goldberg spiral-cable-remove-headliner-and-rear-window-to-fix-me version of yesteryear). You can tell from this forum that the diesel 123 is still on the road only because its owners are in need of Beschäftigungstherapie (something to keep them busy).

Most of all: the 320CDI is so much better than the old diesels that it's not even fair to call them by the same name.

I loved my W201 and my W124, but the 210 is still an MB of their ilk, and better. Now instead of fighting headgsket leaks and broken ignition lock cylinders, I can damage my back replacing 16 spark plugs, and waste my time figuring out the most complicated way to change my transmission fluid.

Bottom line: if it still has the single "panorama" wiper, it's a real Mercedes, even if it has a cupholder.

After having rebuilt a Rube Goldberg W126 sunroof, than worked on the amazingly simple and user friendly glass W210 sunroof, oh yeah MB has come a looooong way. The W126 sunroof sucks frankly, all over priced white metal parts.

I think what most are getting too is don't sell your old(er) diesel benz's for a w210. Every chassis has it's own character. If I had a w123 or w124 or w126 in good shape you bet your a$$ I would hold onto it. But from many it has been gathered that the w210's are a solid car with their quirks. I have yet to notice my w210 using any oil. I got it with 123k and it was run on dino. Since I bought it I have run Delvac 1 and I'm @ over 191k...

So far the w210 has been a fun car to work on. I think my next car will be a w210 E55 a few years down the road. I really have grown found of the w210 chassis, and it looks sexy! If all goes well, I don't plan on getting rid of my w210 diesel. That OM606 at idle when running smooth is such a pleasure to listen to. The w211's are too quiet, but I'd live with it, LOL
