Boost controller?

Can anyone recommend a boost controller for my 83 300CD? I have a Garret turbo. I looked at a few on Ebay but there are many different kinds. Looks like I should be able to pick one up for about $20 shipped. Also, I will need a boost guage. Should I buy a boost guage or use a fuel pressure guage? Thanks for your response. BTW, I did a search and went through 4 pages that did not turn up any recommendations on boost controllers.

Thanks for the link Brian. It was one of the ones I read while doing my search. It is good info but doesnt tell me much in the way of which boost controller is best for my application. Pardon my ignorance, I do not know a whole lot about turbo cars and boost yet but I am learning. Anyone have any recommendations on a specific controller or what I need to look for in a controller?

first, install a boost gauge, about $15 from any auto parts store that carries stuff like neon lights and honda fartcans.

I had bought one off ebay too, it its lowest setting it was giving me 15psi, way too much. it would have eventually started leaking oil out too if i had left it on there.

for a make it yourself controller, take a larger piece of hose about 2 inches long, wrap it around your wastegate line, and attach it with a hose clamp in the middle, tighten the clamp to raise boost, a small turn makes a big difference!

You can see mine in this pic:

Boost Controller

I installed a cheap boost controller, about $10.00 from eBay on my 1981 300SD. I increased the boost from 7 pounds maximum to 12 pounds. Here are some things I did to make it work:

1) I have installed a VDO boost gauge to monitor the boost output. I installed the line in a predrilled and tapped bung in the intake manifold instead of in the ALDA line

2) I had to change the hose barbs in the controller from 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch so that the controller would fin in the hose running from the turbo to the waste-gate. Before I did that, I attached my MitiVac to the controller and set it to 12 pounds maximum boost I did not want to take the boost up to the 15-pound fuel cut off although I have heard of others doing that.

This simple modification has made a big difference in the way the car performs. I had increased the amount of fuel prior to this via the ALDA screw and was seeing some black smoke running down the highway under load. Now the smoke is gone and the mpg has increased due to a more complete burn.

This is what I bought, VooDoo Boost:

I asked for the 6mm fittings a light guage spring. I did have to get some plastic reducers and extra hose from the hardware store. I can remember, but it was like 1/4 to 3/4" reducer or something. I just took some line in and the controller and got what I needed, and went ahead and replaced the waste gate line while I was at it too. This also allowed me to make it longer (instead of just cut and splice adn have it hang out under the air filter) and mount it somewhere, which happened to be on my grounding cable I think. Easy access.

I used the fuel pressure guage. It's tiny, and it worked. I mounted it too my windshield becuase I didn't care about it. BUT, if I could find a boost guage for less than $20, I probably would have bought that. I couldn't find such a thing though when I needed it.

Adjust to where you want, get rid of the guage on the windshield, and be happy!

This is my favorite boost gauge. It is hard to find them in America (this specific VDO gauge, not VDO in general). It matches the stock VDO gauges very nicely. I don't actually have one in the Mercedes YET, but I have one in my Volvo. I also like it because it doesn't go up to some rediculous amount of boost. 20psi is all either of my cars will ever need.

Is this what you are looking for?

I like the one below it better because it doesn't have the vacuum section.

well thanks! I couldn't resist so I just bought one to replace the pep boys one I have in my 124 (which isn't completly accurate) but I did some shopping around and bought one for $38 shipped, slightly different model but still 0-15psi.

who's got good mounting spots for a single gauge in a 124? I currently have it on top of the dash tucked under my dash cover in front of the speaker, angled toward driver.

These guys also seem to have some mounting hardware for gauges.
