starter trouble

Hello again, well im just curious where the starter for my car is located , and is it a pain to try to replace yourself. I have a 1984 300DT, and the mechanic wants to charge me 450$ to replace the starter... i cant afford that so im looking at doing it myself, i have replaced a starter before, but not on a mercedes. I ws not able to locate the starter bu just looking under the hood. Any advice or help is much apperciated. Thank you again.

It's under the car, on the passenger side, rear of the engine. I suggest picking up a Haynes manual, or the MB manual from MBUSA.

Also search this diesel forum for "starter replacement" IIRC, there is a step by step posted here, somewhere.

Buy a good set of 3/8" drive allen sockets(got mine from Sears),You will need them,I jacked the car up to get access, then used and extension and breaker bar to break the bolts loose, then continued removal with a ratchet.Johnny

$450 sound too high, the part should be around $200 and it shouldn't be more than about one hour of labor. $300 sounds more reasonable to me.
