did i get screwed by my Indy?
so i had vacuum issues with my 240D, and i took it to a local indy to check out. he ordered one of the rebuild kits for like $11, but after he had installed them he said they did not help and i need a new pump. he quoted me $130 and up, but a very helpful forum member sent me one for $50 shipped. i decided to go go out today and replace the pump when i saw that the broken pump was never taken off the front of the engine. you can see years of oil/dust/grime was never broken and only the small front of the vacuum pump was removed. is it possible for a mechanic to replace the parts in the vacuum pump by never removing it from the engine? seems really hard to get the parts in there.
i feel like i payed for service not done on my car. i know many of you have worked on your vacuum pumps and have rebuilt it with the low cost kits. does it really need to be removed? thanks everyone Edited after 10 mins... so i just go to my car and realize that i bought the wrong vacuum pump. i feel like an idiot. can anyone tell me exactly what type of vacuum pump i have, and if it is a lever or diaphram type? i got confused when i said which one i needed because i was also looking at my 300D at the time, which is a single hose connection. so... if anyone wants to sell me a good working vacuum pump with 2 hoses comming from it, then please pm me. got to do reasearch now

two line pump
The two line pump is the diaphram type. There are two rebuild kits for it, one is the check valves and stuff that goes in the small part at the front of the pump. Sounds like that is the one your indy replaced. The other kit is the diaphram itself. That is behind the next ring of screws. This kit is also cheap and can be replaced with the pump on the engine. Although I removed the radiator to get at it easier. It could be that you need the diaphram kit.

well when i dropped off the car i told him that it is a diapram type and that i have a kit already for it. well i could not find it in my trunk with all my other stuff i keep in there. so i told him to order me one. when i got it back he said that he ordered the diaphram and that that was wrong. so he ordered what he needed for the lever type. that took 2 days and then he said that the other kind still did not work. that story does not hold up to me, because he never took the pump off to even see the diaphram. i am going to go back and ask him what he really replaced and look at my receipt again. hey i got a pump from gene on this forum for $35 bucks, thanks agian to this forum.

yep, i got the right one this time. i am wondering what is involved in replacing one, other than just taking it off and putting the other on. how exactly is the vacuum pump powered? how does the transfer of energy from the engine to the vacuum pump take place?

There is a cylindrical cam, like a roller coaster track, that rotates (driven by the timing chain). The little wheel you can see in the photo rides on the cam and is pushed in and out each time the cam rotates. The pump just bolts to the front of the engine with a gasket.

If your problem is just the diaphragm then the pump CAN be overhauled in-frame. The pump valves can be accessed also.
