Idle Adjustment
I think the idle on my car is too high. It sits at 1000rpm most of the time. Where do I adjust it on this car?

I believe your 81 300SD has a small knob like thingy on the dash, left of the steering colum. Look in the manual.

Yes, it is a tall screw looking thing behind the lever for the "STOP" button....its a flathead screw, long tube, with a locknut at the bottom (14mm I believe...) Counterclockwise is slower, clockwise is faster.
The SD does not have a knob on the dash, they don't usually need an idle adjustment when its cold....they have enough cylinders to keep going. However, it should be set to about 700-750rpm, not 1000. Are you sure its idling too high? Sometimes the tachometers just read wrong. For reference yours should be running about 3100rpm at 70mph on the freeway......

I can't find a screw behind my stop lever. Can someone point it out in the picture?

Ita actually on the Injection Pump. look down between the IP and the engine block. You will see it right next to the linkage that connects to the IP.

Sorry. I meant behind the rod that connects to the stop lever. It is indeed down on the IP. You will need a Deeep socket to loosen the locknut first, then you can turn the idle screw, be sure to try and hold the screw still when re-tightening the locknut as it can turn the screw with it and send it out of adjustment again.
Easy way to do it: Hand tighten locknut with long socket by hand (hold the socket) and keep a flathead screwdriver on the screw to keep it still. Once the locknut is hand-tight you can switch back to using a ratchet to tighten it down and there's no need to hold the screw still anymore. I took your picture and pointed out exactly where it is:

It worked Thanks. Should I adjust the throttle linkage so that the little pin is all the way into the thing on the stop lever at idle?
