Guide Mountsicles

I am replaceing the guide rod mounts on my 82 300sd. I had the idea if I put the new mounts in the freezer for a day that it would be easier to install them.
Cold contracts was the idea.
After cleaning the mounts of 24 years of crud, I took my plumbing torch and warmed the housing, warm to the touch. I put a little grease on the new mount and 4 taps with the plastic hammer, the new mounts were in.
Has anyone else tried this?

gently warming the housing sounds like a good idea. Did you freeze the mounts also?
