1980 300sd lost power all the sudden,,

hi guys... thought i should try u geniuses... my car was running fine... all the sudden i lost power... before that the turbo was making this whistle noise and was accelerating fine... but all the sudden it doesnt have power , theres smoke coming out of the pipe like a mada.... the turbo seems to be working , but before anything.. i have checked the fuel filters under the hood , their both clean.. someone said it might be the filter in the tank.. ... im thinking of either a filter,, a turbo ,, or a fuel injection pump..... what do u think.. ?? thought and comments highly appreciated.. ..

if you're putting out really thick, black smoke you probably have a turbo problem. What's the smoke look like? Is the car moving at all? The fact that the car is smoking to me rules out a fuel problem.

Check the banjo bolt on the back of the engine. It might be plugged, or the banjo fitting could have broken or come off.

Might be simple. Try the EGR valve, turbo to intake. Elsewhere in this site is a good diagnostic trick: But if you can't find it..... Find a BB or ball bearing a bit larger than the vacuum connector to the EGR valve. (not so small that it fits too loosely or it will suck upstream, not good)) Pull the hose, insert BB -- has to be a snug fit. Re-install hose to EGR. Drive car. Is the lost power over with and good acceleration back plus little or no smoke? Good....your problem is a stuck EGR valve dumping unburned fuel back into intake, an over-rich mixture not burning completely (black smoke) resulting in big reduction in power pulses and not correctable at the ALDA. Permanent repair is to replace EGR valve or, if your conscience allows, leave the BB. (increases NO2 emissions)
