Find a used engine.
What caused the rod to depart from its orderly course?

ive had two of these unknowingly throw rods in the past.

if it was mine (like I did in the past) its time to go junkyard shopping for another engine. Its not worth trying to salvage what you've got when you can get a good motor for $500 or less.

I think there are Ecology auto locations in Chula Vista and around SD. They might have used engines available...but I have no idea how much they would charge.

Yeah the Ecology in Chula Vista is huge, they have a seperate yard just for imports! I've seen some pretty decent diesels at the Oceanside Ecology too.

I was at the Oceanside Ecology a few months ago and didn't see a single diesel MB.

I paied $750 for my salvage 617 turbo engine...it runs like a top!

Its pretty spendy when you look at rebuilding a turbo, you better really like the car too fork over that much$

A friend just got a used engine and had it installed at Bendz Friendz in Seattle, a replacement 616, in his 240 which cost him $2.600.00 ...It pays to DIY

Thrown rod as in broken?

Very likely the block is cracked where the rod hit it.

Used MB engines (617 turbos) are fairly common, and usually in good shape.

oh most definitly it broke the block. when these enginesthrow a rod, they really throw a rod....right out the side of the engine. I have a nicely curved 617 rod hanging above my garage...the same one that came flying out of my friends engine and luckily bounced over my car.

Out of curiosity, what caused the rod to be thrown? Or did it just happen under normal driving conditions etc? How many miles on the engine? Any knock or issues prior to the incident?

Funny you should say that.....I have one just like it from my old 616 240 engine that was replaced with a 617 (non turbo) hanging in my shop on the deemed "wall of glory" featuring the rod, the now s-shaped oil pump drive, my old 67 fastback mustang rearend pinion (in 2 halves), a few bent valves, schrapnelized (if thats a word) piston remains....etc...ahh glory days of hotrodding cars....

Get on Craigslist

Lyle,

It might take some patience, but get on craigslist.com and search LA OC and SD counties for a parts car. I found a recently wrecked parts car--off a tip from a forum user--that has been a godsend. My 300D Turbo has been canibalizing that car for a year now. Best $500 I ever spent.
