I read some where a long time ago that some or all 3.5 engines produced after November 1991 had the updated rods, can anyone verify this?

I do not see how since so many W140 Diesels have had their bottom ends fail...

Six others from BMW, GM, and Ford.

The information I've read stated the "fixed" rods came out sometime in 1995, so very few production models got them. As I recall there have been about 5 revisions to the connecting rods, I'd have to check in EPC to verify.

Not true. There has been speculation that the updated rods came out in the mid-1990's (perhaps late 95?). Very few, if any, USA-spec cars arrived with the updated rods and there is no easy way to tell if a car has them or not (i.e., no VIN or engine number break). But 1991? No way.

Bump

Since these 94 and 95 W140 diesel engines are so obsolete and irrelevant today, were the cause/causes for the rod problems ever definitively resolved?

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?

Those are irreverent words to use in a forum with so many 616 and 617 fans

Unless the cause was underdesigned rods for which the resolution is beefier rods, the cause hasn't been shared by MB, if they even care.

I haven't seen any information on how the rods fare in the 602.94 and .98 (290GD, E290 and G290) with the same bore and stroke. For that matter, the 2.2 liter 601 has the same stroke as the 3.5 with the 3.0's bore and I haven't heard of 2.2's with bent rods.

3.5 bent rod?

I wonder if they thinned the rods out on the 3.5 in order to get a teeny bit more fuel economy? They sold so few though I don't think it would have affected their cafe numbers much.
