Squealing Spedo cable
On the test drive for my Pyrometer I was going 65 and all of a sudden I heard a loud squeal. I immediately shut off the engine and coasted to a stop. As I slowed through 10 MPH the sound changed, then stopped when the car did. I restarted the car and drove off, and the squeal started again. Eventually I pulled over again to take a look, but after stopping and turning off the car I decided to wait until morning to have a look. When I drove home the noise did not return. The speedometer and odometer still worked during and after the sound.
Anybody hear of something like this before?

bg,
Are U sure it is the cable? It might be the speedo head. That's what happened to me. Disconnect the speedo cable from the speedo head and see if the noise stops. If it stops. its probably the speedo head. I got my speedo head rebuilt in Vegas for about $35 bucks and its been OK since. That was about 10 years and 100,000 miles ago. P E H |

Had the same thing happen to me last winter when it got really cold. Screamed like a banshee.
It was in the speedo. My fix was simply to apply some white lithium grease to the plastic gears.

I use to have that happen on the 84 300SD.....sometimes it use to scream in cold weather until the interior warmed up. I finally squirted some WD-40 type product in it and it never happened again.....

speedo
I could be way off the mark but was your a/c on. When my compressor clutch was going bad it would freeze up and cause a God awfull squeel noise. Then go away and come back. Belt dressing and wd 40 helped so far.

Squeal
Had this on my 240d. Mine would squeal on the highway (when weather was cold) pulled over stopped car for a minute start up and it would stop.
My odometer died a few months latter. Had it overhauled at Overspeed Speedometer, no mor squeal. $75 to overhaul not cheap. I am getting good at pulling clusters. Hope this helps |

Well this is the first winter I have had this car and it is just starting to get cold here. I think I'll pull the cluster and lube the gears, hopefully that will work for awhile.
