Exclamation Clutch ratteling when really cold?

so the past couple days that it has been cold, when i start up the 240D (in one crank) with temps in the 30's the engine rattles alot. i didnt find out till today that i was the clutch, b/c when i depress the clutch, the rattling goes away. after it warms up a little or if i drive it for 2 second the rattleing goes away when its idoling.f i increase the idol speed when cold it will go away also. when temps are warmer it never does this. is this because the engine is ideling really low because of the cold temps?

Worn throwout bearing. When you press the clutch, it puts pressure on the bearing.

i think it is pretty common for the tranny to rattle in neutral with the clutch out. it shouldnt be too noisy though.

i dont think this would be the throw out bearing.
that would rattle with the clutch pushed in.

Not always. When the clutch is not depressed, the throwout is still spinning but with little/no tension on it. If there is much slack/wear, it can rattle.

You got it. I've seen a couple of F-450 Powerjokes do the same rattle at idle.

Both of my 4 speeds have the same symptom. It seems to go away once the oils start flowing in the transmission.

well i had a little test set up last night to see why it was doing this. and i came to the conclusion that since the engine was so cold it was idoling very low. i plugged in the block heater last night, this morning i started it and there was no ratteling. im not going to worrie about it, i figure i have 1 more month to drive it before i put it away for storage

thanks for your help
