Question idle control knob

Hi everyone ,
I have just joined and I'm from Australia.
I've had a 1974 240d for a few years now and recently the idle control knob on the dash has stopped doing what it was supposed to do(adjust the idle). At first I thought it was just a matter of tightening the screw on the cable (engine end) but that didn't make any difference and so I completely disconnected it to find the thing wasn't working at all!
My question is how do you get the damn thing out of the dash because I have taken out the instrument cluster and using a mirror can't find how it comes out!!. I can find no screw unless i'm not looking close enough and the chrome bezel behind the knob does nothing until you release the cable assy.
Frustrated Kevy!!!

Question idle control knob

Thanks jimmy for the picture. It shows a small nut. Maybe if I have another look and try and undo it ? but if anyone out there can tell me how it comes out I'd much appreciate it.
Kevy.

Just pull the black plastic knob off and unscrew the chrome nut on the outside of the dash. The assembly can then be removed from behind the dash.

Yep. That is how it comes off of the dash. After it is removed, unattached it from the throttle and pull it through the dash. Mine was frozen so I pulled the casing off, greased and straightened the cable and oiled the "knob" assembly. Works great now!

Picture #50. Don't be afraid to pull the black knob hard. Mine was pretty tight. Unscrew the chrome nut and feed the cable out the firewall. Remove the cable and replace the entire assembly.
