Question Sorry, amateur question - drain coolant necessary for t-stat replacement?

I know this one will be resolved quickly.... and I apologize for the complete amateur question...

Is it necessary to drain the coolant before replacing the thermostat?
If it makes any difference, I am asking about the '91 350SD.

It's a good idea to drop the coolant level below the tstat housing...you can collect it easier from the stopcock down low than from the tstat housing hose = less spillage. But if you have a real big flat pan underneath, you can just undo the housing hose...the less spillage of anitfreeze - the better.

I would drain the coolant before touching the thermostat. Pulling the lower hose will drain the radiator and reservoir. Then there's the coolant in the block behind the thermostat. The thermostat is not much higher than the block drain so I don't imagine much will be left in the system when you pull the thermostat.

The lowest bolt of the thermostat housing is most easily accessed from below so you might as well pull the encapsulation panel to get to the block drain.

The block drain has a fitting for something like a garden hose. Makes it easy to keep the coolant clean for reuse.

I did a stat in mine on Sunday. I put the screwdriver on the head of the drain bolt and it fell off. I ended up just pulling the hose off the stat housing neck and draining it there into a 5 gal bucket. I slowly refilled it into the reservoir so that some of the sediment was able to settle out.
