Help needed parts identification - injector
Hello all.
This is a multi-part question. This car is a 78 300CD-old style loop plug block. I have searched for a while now trying to find an answer in the forums with no luck. In the attached picture there are two injectors. In the injector on the left, there is a large opening where the line attaches(where the fuel would enter the injector). In the injector on the right, there is a little three holed insert. Are these mixed and matched injectors or am I missing parts? Should there be the insert in every injector? 3 of 5 have them. I recently got the car and it pings when you get on it hard. Would not having these things inserted cause more fuel to flow to the injector than the ones who's flow is restricted? I'm guessing that is the purpose of these little things. From what I have read about pinging, it is usually injector related? Could these two cylinders be getting too much fuel? I noticed these when I had the fuel lines disconnected to replace the glow plugs. I am trying simple things before pulling the injectors to look at their condition on the nozzle end. I hope you can see the detail I'm talking about. They make you shrink your file so small to upload. Thanks for your help and suggestions! Robb

From what I remember the 'three hole' injectors are 'short body' type...ie: the lower half is short.
The 'long' lower half injectors have one fuel entry hole...however there is only a difference in the amount of fuel injected if the pintal or delivery nozzel is bigger. As long as the pintals are all the same part # the fuel quantity will be the same. There are some injectors kicking around that fitted a OM352 truck engine that looked identical to the 240D and 300D injectors (123 chassis.) these have a larger pintal and they will make a 615/616/617 engines 'hammer' and knock and under load will overheat. The OE pintal...spray nozzel should look pointed to the naked eye and stick out a little, not flat on the end . Your 'pinging' can be caused by...chamber deposits...chamber ball missing or broken....over fueling...injector 'dumping' during delivery....over advanced i/p timing and high coolant temperatures and a few others. First, check the i/p timing. . .
