Block Heater Installation
I just bought a block heater kit for my 1979 240D. Does anyone have any suggestion or pointers for this installation?

Which kind? Lower radiator hose or the one that threads into the engine?

Buy a case of beer before you get to work. If you don't have a 3/4" drive set, now's the time to invest. $100 at Northern Tool for a full set. Get a small propane torch which you may need Some good penetrant... i.e. PB, Liquid Wrench, etc.

Block Heater Installation
I bought one of these for my 1977 240D...It's been a while but I believe that it goes in the right side of the engine very near the starter.
If I remember correctly, I used a large adjustable wrench to get the plug out. It wasn't easy, but I finally got it removed. The I used some teflon tape to cover the threads on the new block heater...about 3 times around and screwed it in. Connect the plug to the heater, wire tie the cable out of the way and plug it in. What a difference in cold weather. It's a dirty job and you'll get wet...not so wet if you drain the coolant first. I believe that the one I purchased was 400 watts...get a timer...you'll only need it on about 4 hours in most weather...you can run it all night, but you'll notice it on your electric bill. You may want to double check to make sure there isn't a factory one there, in which case you will only need to wire a cable to it. If not, make that 2 cases (in addition to the one listed previously), and a 4-6 foot cheater bar. You also might want some paper to write down all the new and exciting cuss words you will be making up ...good luck!

Thanks for all your help. Sounds like i have my hands full. I'll check to see if I have a factory heater first. I guess this will be a nice little project to start after Thanksgiving.

Dont even start. Take the block heater back and just put in a cheap KAT lower radiatror hose unit, easy 30 min install.the block instals are a beast..did it once..never again.
