85 MB station wagon

My new to me station wagon hatch will not open. I do not find anything in the archives on this. The outside handle will not release it and I have crawled into the cargo area and tried to open with the inside handle but it does not release the door either. Is there an emergency method or must I remove the interior panels on the liftgate to release the latch? I would appreciate some help here

Does the button push in?
Does it have resistance when you do it?

The liftgate release button does push in and it does have resistance as though it is connected but it doesn't release

Stupid question . . . is it unlocked? There should be a knob inside like the other doors. If it is not opening from the inside, the latch mechanism may be broken. There is a little pot-metal casting that the inside lever screws to that is known for breaking. But if this is broken, the lever feels like it is just floating in the recess it is in.

Even if you can not unlock it with the key from the outside, it should still open with the button on the outside if it is unlocked. Also keep in mind that it will only unlock with the master key which has the square head not the valet key which has the round head.

Mine would not unlock with the key, so I pulled it apart and found 21 years worth of road grime that had blown into the cylinder due to it being on the rear of the car. I cleaned it up, lubed it with marine grease and put it back together and it works great. Be warned that if you have to take it apart, it is difficult and you will need universal joint sockets because it is not a straight shot to the nuts.

It may be released but it is stuck. In the past, one of the kids could not open the unlocked hatch and it to me giving it a good pull to get it to open.

Not a stupid question. The liftgate is unlocked . The key unlocks(inside lock button raises )easily with the key action. Nothing feels broken--it just doesn't work. Maybe the liftgate is stuck --will try getting in cargo area and pushing while some one pushes button in to release.----This is pretty wild

On my '85 wagon, when it hasn't been opened in a while, it takes both hands, all the strength I can muster, and a violent jerk upwards to get it open. I have aggravated my disk problem on more than one occasion doing this....

Then to add insult to injury, when it's cold out it comes down and hits me in the back of the head.........

I was almost decapitated one time by the hood on an '87 190D. Somebody on here bought that car. It was nice......
