What's your diesels MPG?

I'm curious what kind of MPG's our diesels are getting. More specifically what kind of MPG can I expect with my 1980 300SD?

Most folks seem to average in the mid-20s with a 617 turbo, depending on what type of driving you do. You will here numbers from 20 to a little over 30, but mine usually stays in the 22-27 mpg range.

81 300sd

Last spring my friends and I took a road trip to San Francisco from San Diego in his 81 300SD. An eight hour trip both ways and three days of city driving with 5 passangers and all of our gear yielded around 25-27 MPG. I would have to say that is pretty good for a car that has close to 300.000 miles on it.

I get about 26 with summer diesel and about 24 with winter diesel. I drive rather fast, so this may play a role. I am going to install new injector nozzles in a few weeks, so the mileage may get better.

I get consistent 27 MPG on dino-diesel.

Consistent 24.5 MPG on B20 bio.

This is mostly city driving, probably 70/30 city/highway. In Atlanta just because you are on the highway does not mean that you are doing highway driving.

Fuel mileage is marginally higher in autumn when it's warm but not so warm that i need to run the A/C. Mileage drops off just a bit in winter (car runs colder and my theory is not quite as efficient) and a little bit in summer with constant A/C running.

I get about 48mpg in my two Golf diesels. Oh, wait.. my 87 300TDT is getting somewhere around 22-25 mpg with mixed city and highway. I've only had it about a month, so haven't been monitoring the MPG too well. Don't know my 80 300TD well enough to say...

I pull about 400 miles out of a tank (16 gallons, I think). That's mixed, and I am a little heavy on the pedal.

I must brag about my MPG because changing my differential has made a huge difference.

First off I must explain that 90-95% of my driving is on the highway so this is my highway mileage and I don’t have a city, but last time I clocked from a full to a bone dry tank I got 35mpg and my typical highway speed is 80mph (the AC was also on more than half of the time during this test)

If you drive mostly on the highway I defiantly recommend the swap

1984 300sd

Here are the mileage figures for every tank of gas I put in my 1984 300SD:

Please note that in Jan 2006 I changed the rear diff ration from 3.01:1 to 2.47:1.
