HELP - modulator replacement in progress - can't seem to seat it right

hey all,

trying to replace my transmission vacuum modulator on my 82 300D (722.3 trans) right now.

-i am replacing the red pin behind the modulator
-took old one out
-new one doesn't seem to seat all the way in. how far in is it supposed to go? right now it still sticks out a little bit. it feels like its not seated all the way, but ive pushed and twisted plenty, its not going in any further.
-the old pin/mod was seated in there, but the pin was borken, hence the replacement
-trying to put the mod in, it doesn't go in all the way either. i *think* its being stopped by the pin.

I dropped the trans pan for better access. its making me nervous to have it open and working near it...should i put it back?

any tips from people who have done this one before...please help...

thanks
dd
