i would be surprised if the trannies are different between gas and diesel. the rear end will be different though.

the only different tranny was the one in the 16v. it was a close ratio with a 1 to 1 final vs the normal .80 or so overdrive ratio. it also was a totally differnt tranny, a getrag, i believe. with a different shift pattern even.

I completely forgot about the final drive, that would solve the problem.

I always apply what I know about VWs, which seems to burn me more often than help me in terms of wrenching on the MB.

My MB is the first front engine/rear wheel drive car I've ever had.

The possibles ,probables, and plausables have been answered now is it in my budget for this to happen,I dont like projects that gather dust so I usually dive in and geter done once I start.Hope this rules out any been their done that kind of response ,thats why you guys are champs when it comes to second guessing an oppurtunity .The 2.2 has rust and a leaking sunroof hasnt helped the interior any.Warped door panels and a boat like smell gives this car a pass over when its asked "lets take your car".The yes catagory are their, the purchase is cheap ,if it dosnt work out Ive got a very good parts car and could sell the 5 spd.I dont think I could lose. thanks
