I have a 83 300SD that had the engine replaced before I bought it. The engine is a 617.952 and the tachometer does not work. I have replaced the amplifier. The tach itself works if the dash is connected to a different car, so I know it is OK. I replaced the pickup coil but to no avail. I don't know if cars that had the 952 engine were tach equipped, if not maybe the crank dampner does not have a magnet enbedded to trigger the pickup. Does this sound correct or have I missed something else? Thanks in advance for any info you can add.

The balancing disc (behind the vibration damper) should have a pin on it to trigger the pick-up.

The pin is right at the 0 degree marking point on the disc. Look for a fractured pin at this location. |
