No defrost and other 300DS issues

I have only been driving this '83 300SD for the last five days and I have a lot of loose ends to tie up but the first thing I want to address is the cilmate control problems I am having.

The defrost will not work, at all. However, it did most of the day last Thrusday; but on Friday, when I drove it 600 miles, it quit on me.

Even with the climate control off, there is still warm air coming through the vents, especially the lower vents under the dash. Is there a way to get fresh air? The A/C does not work and maybe never will, but some fresh air would be nice for these unseasonably warm winter days.

The heat will only come on when it is set on "automatic" it shuts off when I push the high or low fan buttons. It works on "econo" as well as the next two buttons to the left. Defrost shuts everything down.

When I turn on the heat it takes 12 seconds for the blower to start up and another 5 seconds for it to come up to speed.

The thermostat wheel has no effect on fan speed, however I do notice a hissing noise, like vacume is being released, when I turn the wheel to the cool setting and a click when I turn it back up.

I still do not know if this is an electrical or vacume issue but I have a vacume guage and a multimeter as well as the w123 a/c and climate control trouble shooting manual (I'm not sure that will help at all, but...). However, I am still looking for a copy of the w126 manual. So if any one had had the same problem or if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

I should say that my car's ignition switch has been bypassed and there is a starter button I use. I still have to turn the key on and let the plugs warm up but then I pust the button and every thing starts. The blower motor does not turn on when I turn the key (accessory) on, the radio does. The dash lights are also out accross the board. Not sure if that makes any difference or not but thought I would mention it because I have read other posts where the ignition was related to the problem.

Thanks in advance...Joe
