I got a new key at The Home Depot for my 240D

A girl found a blank that she thought would work and was cutting the key when the dude that runs the machine came by and said it would not work. It is an "Axxess+" key blank number 31R, cassette B. It works smoother than my original key. I know the part about the non steel key but I want it for an emergency back up. I only had the one key for the car. Local dealers want $47.00 for a replacement key. Wish some dealer somewhere would sell us keys at a decent price. I hear people telling about getting vin keys for $12.00. I will need a new cylinder and key at some point soon, until then I have the spare with the rubber head for $1.79.

I got my laser cut dealer key for $20 (w124), $47 for the simpler W123 key sounds like a rip off.

The W123 keys sell for about $20 when ordered from the dealer...if yours is charging $47 they are saying they don't want your business...shop elsewhere.

rip the rest of the head off and order another key.

it'll work perfect as a flat/wallet key.

hdepot key

carusle: Thanks for the tip regarding the key. Home depot frowned on making me one as well. Dude went by the book and said he couldn't do it. I'll jot a note and see about the numbers you listed, maybe they'll have a go at it....

I went to a local lock and key place (Dixie Lock & Safe) and they cut me two back up keys for less than $3 each. They ar ilco brand, and looks like x83 and MB39. On the back they say "for mercedes".

Those are good for spares I guess, but I prefer OEM keys for all my vehicles.

Same here, but it took the guy a couple of tries to get it right. This was on my wrecked '85 and I used them for a couple of months before it was wrecked. The rubber head was coming off the original and I didn't know at the time about using non-steel keys. I'll probably swap the locks and ignition to my donor body so I can feel like I'm keeping a little of my baby in the new car. The '84 came with three rubber keys, two of which appear to be brand new so I'm set.
