'99 E300-Cold Start Metallic Noise

Hey guys,
My E300 is running beautifully, but on cold starts I experience a metallic rattling/clicking noise for about seven seconds upon startup. Comes from the very front of the engine....I'm 98% sure it's the chain tensioner. Is this the correct guess?

On the same note (although I believe unrelated), when idling hot it emits a slight random clicking, can't pinpoint its exact location. I've heard of gasser engines (119s mainly) having broken plastic cam oilers, do these 606s have them as well?

Did you do your delivery valve seals too while you had your IM off last week? Could be some minor nailing.

Also check the tensioner pivot arm. It has a metal sleeve that rides on a steel pin. You can drop the belt and run a COLD engine for 30 secs to confirm that.

Are you sure it's not a combustion knock? Especially if you have one bad glow plug, you'd get a lot of knocking after a cold start. Never assume your glow plugs are fine just because they're new. The only way to tell is to do a cold/hot resistance test.

I believe the cars with the serpentine belt, and its tensioner, are susceptible to this noise when the tensioner wears out. Check the threads on engine mount replacements of late, there is a link between the condition of the mounts and the life of the critical tensioner parts described that was news to me.

I would guess you have pointed to the right component, but you should make sure you look to see if the mounts are shot too, otherwise it looks like it is possible for the tensioner to have an unsatisfactorily short life. Good luck, Jim

One bad glow plug will trigger the glowplug/check engine light. If mounts are original, it's time.

My 99 e300 has done this since I've owned it. (67k) I assumed that it was an intended function of a cold start.

I get the same noise you are describing. Mine comes from the belt idler pulley dampner. To test I just put my finger on the dampner where it bolts to the block (sound stops). Finger off (sound is back). Might be like most people here are saying and your belt tentioner (idler) is wearing out.

Thanks guys, it's definately not nailing, is a difinitive clicking that can be heard above startup knock, and it only happens during the first several seconds upon start-up. This is the noise I belive to be caused by the chain tensioner. I did not change my delivery valve seals last week but they are only a year old. I also have one bad GP still in there and the CEL/GP light is not abnormally triggered. I can try to make a recording of the sound this morning because the car is cold right now.

The second noise I am experiencing (random ticking on hot idle) may be caused by the belt tensioner. I'll try putting my finger on the damper when it's making the sound and see if it changes; I agree though, I probably need to look at the motor mounts.

Don't put your finger on it, if you value your skin. It will be red hot.

Use a screwdriver.

Hi

Is it not just the hydraulic tappets filling up with oil pressure? Mine does it and i think its normal first 2-3 secs
