87 300D Trap Oxidizer Recall Question

I got a letter in the mail today from MB (have no idea how they got my name and address!), stating that my vehicle has not had the trap oxidizer removed and can have it replaced with an "oxidation catalyst" under the recall. The wierd thing is, that I thought the trap was removed on my car. What I have, is a pipe that is about 4 inches in diameter that is wrapped in some kind of webbed foil. Isn't this the replacement for the trap? I thought the trap was the size of a football? Anybody know anything about what a trap looks like on a 6 cyl? If it hasn't been replaced, would that explain why I've never had low rpm power with this car? Also, will they put in a new turbo at the same time? Any info would be appreciated!

Your trap has been replaced. Strange that you got the letter. They must not have a record of it being done which may mean it was done somehow by an indy and not reported properly. You could take it into the dealer and ask them to validate that the recall was done properly based on your receiving the letter. Doubtful that they would do anything.

Take it in anyway. You might get a new exhaust out of the deal for free.

On the other hand you might give up your cat free downpipe for a brand spanking new oxidizer catalyst :/

That should be in the exhaust after the turbo so a new oxidizer catalyst would be a good thing.

I've got one more question: how does MB get peoples names and addresses for an owner of a car that has passed through at least 3 different people in the last 3 years? Heck, I bought the car last July, it seems really odd.

If he took the car to the dealership for service the info might be passed to the MB database. But they would have caught recall eligibility right then.

I'd bring it in anyway and play dumb. You might get a brand new exhuast and turbo out of this.
