First - my 240D is in the need of the same conversion. So I have questions:
I can't seem to locate the old GP relay, anyone tell me where it's at? Under the black box on the driver side? Pics would be MOST welcome. Next, I do have the Fast Glow Kit but if I can just go with newer plugs only... I'll go that route to save some green. Or should I just install the FG Kit and get on with life? I can't seem to figure out where the wires are supposed to go.

Thanks--and if you feel up to a fuller explanation about needing a solenoid for the starter if I do install a manual GP switch, I'd love to hear it! Cheers. -n |

I agree, your relay is most likely fine, its under the panel above your knees, drivers side, but get your car cranking over and I'm guessing all will be OK, I used #10, multi strand wire for jumpers. If you need the push button, you need a solenoid because there are too many amps to put through a 15 amp switch. With the new style you will only want to "glow' of about 5-10 seconds.

What does the existing relay look like?

It is a silver box under the driver's side “knee” panel under the dash. I have se same "conversion" using pencil plugs and the old loop relay, but lately it won't glow until I start craning the engine over. I think my relay is to blame. Is the newer relay "plug and play" or should I just replace it with another of the old style relays?

I think there's a pic here:
http://dieselgiant.com/mercedesdieselloopglowplugrepair.htm I just did an upgrade on my 240, and it works like a charm. |

Okay rock on, it is where I thought it was located.
Has anyone installed the Fast Glow kit? I got it for a really good price, but can't seem to see where to run the wires from the new relay. Maybe they go to the wiring on the old? ![]()

working with flashing
hey there,
the car (1980 300D) started after charging the battery some more--thanks for the reminder. so now i'm happy to report that after installing the fast-glow pencil plugs (my car apparently already had the fast-start relay) it's a quick 10 second glow and starts without needing to step on the accelerator. i still have a flashing situation on my dash glow plug light--i've read this is an indication that something is wrong, but for now i'm happy it's starting and i'll look into this more after working on that durn transmission. thanks! noah

You installed new GPs then? Usually if a glow plug is bad and not warming the cylinder like it should, that unburnt fuel will come out the tail pipe as smoke and you'll have a rough idle till the engine warms up. On the other hand I personally haven't had my indicator light act up without something being wrong. Your "flashing lights" could be a bad ground, in which case a new ground from the instrument cluster might solve the problem.

bad ground to instrument cluster
Thanks Steve, I will look for a ground solution to the flashing GP light on the dash. Yes, I had installed the new GPs (pencil style, large diameter) because the new relay box was installed by a PO, but the old loop style plugs were still in there (?). It starts much better now, but still has somewhat rough idle--lots of issues with this car I will be sorting out.
