84 300 sd started on first try.......
i guess i be bragging. outside temp close to 15f. did not use block heater. turned the key on. waited for glow plug light to go out. then counted slowly to 10. hit the starter and we were off and running. all 5 cylinders just purring. i installed new glow plugs and adjusted the valves in the past month. all is well. fyi. miles on car? 210k.

Sounds like your engine still has a lot of time left in it as well. I consider this type of thing a good indication of remaining useful engine life. .As well as current general condition.

mine is starting well in the low 20's, I have plugged in the heater cord, but I do not think it is working, or it may not be connected to anything. not sure. it starts fine, but it kinda stumbles a bit for the first 30 seconds or so. and the temp gauge takes FOREVER (actually about 2 to 5 minutes... just so cold sitting in the car!) to get the needle to move... I got the SD to start at ZERO degrees at 7:00 this morning in the Marriott parking lot. 35 seconds of glow and it was running in 1 second.
Yes, I was suitably impressed. ![]() |

Single digits seem to be my no-go zone without plugging in. No problems in the mid-teens, but below that I guess I've got a little fiddling to do. Or just plug it in and leave it alone.
I will check to see how old the battery is, though.

My 240D with 253K logged, starts with 1 glow in temps in the upper teens, with just 1-2 second crank
![]() however my winter car with 224K LOgged, usually is a real hassel to start. it will start first but only run for a couple seconds then die. so if i then start it before the glow light goes off it will run a little longer, b/c the glow plugs are still on. I think it still has the old relay in it, not the updated one that makes the GP's stay on for like 30 Seconds after. ANyways, this starting will continue till it decieds it wants to run, or one i get it running i shoot the RPM's up to 1K. then it will be fine
