1996 e300 stays on problem
I have a 96 e300d that remains on if the key is removed. It's not a runaway diesel. Ignition remains on for some reason with key removed. Sometimes if I remove the key, "remove key" message appears even with key removed. Sometimes the dash lights remain on. It appears the 2nd position of the ignition circuit is remaining powered with the key off. Even with the ignition plug disconnected, the problem remains. The ignition switch was replaced recently. I have tried unplugging modules and no luck. Lights on cluster remain on. When I say lights, I am referring to all the error lights.

Are you saying the engine continues running with the key out or that the dash electronics remain lit up?

When my 82 engine kept running, even with the key out, all my lights lit up too, opening the hood and using the manual engine stop shut off the engine and the lights on the dash went out also.
Vacuum leak in the locking system kept the shut off valve from operating properly.
