Drives and runs great except the hood won't open.
I semi know the seller...trust he isn't hiding anything.

Depends on what you want to use it for, parts or driving.

How is the rust, and what was the maintenance frequency?

Well, I guess it depends on how long it's been since the hood was last opened.

Hood

Yeah, I would make sure you get the hood open and check it over real well before you hand over the cash. Seems like a good price though if it is in half-way decent operating condition and not a rust bucket. What kind of mileage is on the clock?

85 300D
Minor rust at usual places.
278K
Same owner since 120K
Drove her up to ~85 shifts fine drives straight.
Usual climate control issues (wrong vents...a/c compressor kicks in but air is warm)
door locks work.
Pulled on latch to open the hood to hear cable snap.

I'd say go for it. I'm getting a 1980 SD with 310k but the best part is it was a one-owner with all the service records. Needs the basics, like I think the servo's toast and it needs a new rack damper bolt, and there's a vacuum leak somewhere. They also want $1K for it and I'm snatching it because it is absolutely gorgeous inside and out. Pics to come in a couple of days when I get it home.
