Cat cleaner

Just thought I'd post this. A member on a UK forum I'm on has posted about this.

Heres the product:

http://www.kalimex.co.uk/section.html?secpath=01.07.&pgid=38

Heres the original thread:

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=25013

My cat is almost brand new, but I thought since you guys are scrupulous about keeping your engines clean, it might be a new toy for you all to try It seems to be a genuine product with data to back it up.

(Sigh of relief) I thought this thread was about felines! "Camels" and cats just dont' mix.

I am glad we don't have diesel emissions issues in CA.

As far as the claims for cleaning out our catalytic converter I'm not going to believe it. It would have to survive the heat of combustion in the cylinder before it reaches the catalytic converter which isn't very likely.

It may however reduce the amount of soot produced, which in the long run the catalytic converter will clean itself (provided it gets hot enough). Cleaning out the injectors and rest of the fuel system will do this to some extent. Of course just dumping half a quart/liter of transmission fluid into your fuel tank will do this too. Adding soybean oil to your fuel will also reduce soot but will increase NOx emissions a tad.

The only way I have every cleaned a cat out is to use a long piece of rebar and a hammer to knock all the contents into little bits and out the other end..... Then its just a nice straight through "resonator" but passes the visual inspection easily. No way it'll clog up after that. RT

So that's what I've been doing wrong. I didn't know you're supposed to raise the lid after flushing.

Typical snake oil sales people....All they do is marketing....
None of these products constitutes a 'real' fix or repair...same old trotted out excuse if it don't work for you.." You must have not followed instructions properly...blah blah blah..."

Unprovable claims for product performance....additives and the like...you buy it and use it...it fails and you can't be bothered to claim a refund, etc, etc, so you have just contributed to their bottom line.

It's like all the other crappy stuff..Slick 50, Octan Booster, muffler tip turbo extractor, Turbonator or Tornado , fuel catalists, fuel magnets, even the Laundry Ball , remember that ?

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/ATG/index.html

You just have to check this out too...http://www.worldwidescam.info/

Back to the plot......
They even contradict/confound themselves in their own copy......eg:

"..................Possibly the most amazing moment of the 2005 season was during the first outing at Brands Hatch in April. Due to a communication breakdown the car was put on the track without any oil in the transmission which normally would have resulted in a terminal gearbox failure within one or two laps. However, the transmission had previously been treated with K-Tek and as a result it not only survived over 50 full pace laps of the Indy circuit but, (now with oil added), continued to perform problem free until almost the end of the season when an unrelated problem meant the end of the 'box..............."

How convenient

"2006 saw the addition of a Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth to the team. After alot of blood sweat and tears the Cossie made it on to the track at Castle Coombe only to be 'Schumachered' resulting in an off and an unwelcome meeting with some concrete bollards. A substantial rebuild of the rear end has got the car back in shape but turbo problems and a broken wrist for Andy means it will not race again this season. An engine rebuild is scheduled for the winter ready for a fresh attack in 2007."

Oh dear!!!! What happened to the magic additive you put in the motor...don't seem to work ? Perhaps you didn't follow the instructions properly !

I would imagine being able to pass an emissions test where before you couldn't is quite interesting. Of course you'd also have to put the car on a rolling road to check that the fluid hadn't somehow reduced the amount of fuel being burnt/used, but its a bit negative to dismiss it out of hand without first investigating.

Any product that can reduce the amount of soot produced by a diesel with a catalytic converter will increase performance/fuel economy because the cat won't plug up as much.

I don't buy the claims it actually cleans the cat(directly) but it may reduce soot emissions which will improve the flow through the cat which will reduce other emissions because the engine doesn't have to work as hard. It may not be snake oil and even if it is, an OM617 will run on snake oil.
