It's worth the gold membership for the peace of mind. Rarely do I drive more than a hundred miles from home, so at almost any given time, if my car takes a crap, I can get it home without going broke.

I have roadside assistance thru my auto insurance. it costs $5 per six months. it is almost as good as AAA, but you have to pay the tow, then you get reimbursed.

I have used them a few times- 3 tows, and once my ignition locked up in a ford ranger. this was at 7pm, and I had to go to work at 3am. called a locksmith, 5 minutes he was done- for $85. took in the receipt, no problem. they cut a check on the spot.

I use statefarm now, but most all the bigger co.s offer this service.

I would a chain instead of a strap. Tried a strap once with an American car that weighed the same as a w123. Strap was rated for 8000 pounds, but the slack dragging on the pavement did it in in the course of a city mile. Went a bought a chain. Still have and use that chain.

I also have AAA plus. Gives 100 miles tow.

You have to learn to tow. If the strap touches the ground, you're doing something wrong, the rear car keeps it taut and does most of the braking, have to anticipate the front driver's movements.

After years of towing cars in my youth, my friends and I could always anticipate each other's moves and it always went smoothly, just did it a few days ago towing the Vanagon FrankenSyncro across town.

at my boss's garage, whenever we had to tow a vehicle, the tow vehicle used hand signals to alert the guy in the towed vehicle to use the brakes.

My brother in law, in a 1967 Corvair was towing my father in law in a 1964 Olds 98. They came down a very long steep hill and my father in law was unable to use the power(less) brakes to slow down the Olds. My brother in law kept going faster and faster until finally he sees the Olds pull out alongside. My brother in law figured he was about to be jerked backwards when the chain pulled up tight. Lucky for both of them the hook on the chain came off and my father in law sped past the Corvair until the next uphill finally stopped him.
