The MAF was replace at about 58,000 miles which was about July of 2005. I do have a spare K40 relay that I bought new, but did not need at the time.
There is no 'ping' when it misses.

What does the K40 relay control?

Yesterday was the first that I had noticed it. Monday I filled up at a different place than where I currently buy fuel, however, it is the same place where I used to buy fuel.

The K40 provides power to the shutoff valve among other things. Unless it has died suddendly while driving I doubt it is the problem.

I wouldn't rule out bad fuel as being the culpret...I'd drive it through this tank and see if it still has a problem on a fresh tank from a different source.

In that case I suspect bad fuel or a fuel leak somewhere as I mentioned last time. Did you check under the black plastic cover? See if there's fuel puddling in one of the injector holes. Also try adding some cetane booster and water disperser if you suspect your fuel is bad.

As far as water I remember when GM had their junk diesels there was a sensor to detect water in the fuel. With all of the monitoring on a 606 is there not a sensor to chek for water in the fuel?

The reason I suspect the fuel is because you say it only starts to miss 1-2 minutes after startup. The glow plugs aid ignition for 1-2 minutes, once they shut off the compression ignition is all that will function. If the fuel is of poor quality it might just be good enough to run with the GPs heated but not good enough to fire well under compression ignition alone 100% of the time...just a theory but it would explain why it runs OK during that first 1-2 minutes.

I had the same problem. Start-flutter-smooth-miss-miss-smooth-smooth-miss-miss. Really tough to tell when on the road around here when people don't lay a concrete roadbed before the asphalt.
Anyway, I replaced all the fuel lines and the shutoff valve seal and the valve itself and the problem is not showing itself anymore (knock on wood).

Due to the snow that we had over the past few days my 100 meter driveway is a mess even after being "cleared out". My turn around area is a solid three feet of snow and I have not even attemped to tackle it. Fortunately almost directly arcoss the turn around on the other side of the driveway is a clear spot in the yard that I am using as a temporary turn around.

Anyhow, as a result I turned my E300 around this morning and backed it into the garage for my wife. I did not pay any attention to it running as it seemed to run fine while turning it around which took about three minutes. After I backed it into the garage I left it running just to see how it ran. After listening I now suspect the fuel even more. It ran without a miss for a while then there was a very faint miss. Then fine then another miss. After the second miss I let it run about thirty more seconds and no more misses. The lack of a pattern leads me towards the fuel.

I highly doubt it. I've never heard of a water-in-fuel sensor.

Well,
When my wife arrived home I asked how the car ran. She gave me this look and I thought’ “uh-oh”. I know of no connection to the problem she had the issue that I listed in this thread. She had two stops tonight before coming home. When she left the first shot the warning sign for the ARS (yield sign) on the dash light up and stayed lit. She drove like this from the first stop to the second stop. This drive was in-town driving about one mile long. At the second stop she shut the car off. When she left she drove ten miles home with no ASR light and no other issues.

She also told me that she thought that she smelled a hint of diesel fuel at one of the stops. I pulled the plastic cover on the head and it is dry down in the injector pockets. I also put a light on the other side. The top of the IP was dry as it should be after spending big $$ to replace the delivery valve seals. In addition, everything is dry around the fuel lines, shut-off, and belly pan. I think that is fuel.

If you have a mirror use the flashlight and look up under the shut off valve and at the two lines that are to the right of it (fuel/lift pump).

Trust the wife's nose.....

Does the '99 have a traction control over-ride button like the '98? I know on my '98 if I hit that the light comes on and stays on until I either hit it again or re-start. It is possible she inadvertintly hit the over-ride button and didn't realize it?

Also, sometimes you can be driving behind a car that's leaking fuel and attribute it to your own car. It happens when you have in your mind there's something wrong and you are looking for causes.

Sometimes when we look too hard we find troubles that don't really exist is all I am saying...if the car otherwise ran fine I would ignore these two "symptoms" for now and if they occurred again then look into them if it was my car.
