Got my new toy home, 82 240D ?euro?

Got my newest Benz (82 240D) unloaded in the shop this morning to start playing with. What a find this was! I was told the original owner had special ordered it in germany and then brought it back to the states. I rescued it from the PO for $100, who was about to give it to the wrecker as he had gotten tired of it sitting in his garage with a dead trans. The body has no rust, paint is fair and original with the black strip under the radiator, interior is great other than driver seat. There are many new parts on the car. After putting a charge on the near dead battery the engine fired right off and doesn't smoke, reverse tried to work but no forward gears (fluid is full). Tires are near new. I ran the vin on the Russian site, and it came back as a "NATO members sales" as the dealer....interesting, the vin is also unique in that it has a bunch of letters in the first part instead of the usual WDB123.... It still has the complete triangle kit in the trunk lid, complete first aid kit, all wood trim console, Becker Europa 2 cass deck in working order, cruise ctrl, right side mirror, drivers armrest, & numbers matching engine & transmission to the vin decoder. In the glove box I found the clear plastic envelope embossed with the MB star, and containing the red cruise ctrl operating tag, green emergency phone contact/instructions tag (all for German locations/numbers) owners manual, maintenance booklet, and white consumer info pamphlet, all in mint shape. The car is all complete and even the headlight trims are in nice shape with no road cracks.
I'm not too keen on the red colored interior thats in it so I am going to swap it out I think with my other rusty car that will now become a parts donor, so if anyone needs some red stuff...... I do like the exterior color, I am really considering cleaning up the dings and hairline paint cracks and repainting it (too far gone to polish, weathering through) while it is apart and not yet running.

im not sure thats a euro, cause a EURO Vin is WDB123123 and then some other numbers. at least thats how my 83 euro is. But thats a freaking awsome find.... wish i could find a deal like that

Nice catch. It's great to see one of these saved from the crusher. It will run for a long time after it is fixed up

Hmm, well if thats true, then that means my (I thought to be) Cali model 80 240 I've been driving around is really a euro?

Sounds like European delivery: buy the car in the states; pick it up in Germany and drive it around Europe; MB then ships it home.

Yeah, likely the American buyer in Europe grabbed the Warndrieke (Trunk warning triangle & mounting clip) and the first aid kit, and brought them back to the USA, himself, as they probably would have been grabbed up by the DOT, which did not approve them. Maybe he took them to the USA in his carry on luggage and them put them in the car after taking possession of the car in the USA

Yeah I guess the Cali option does kinda limit its possibilities huh? lol Interesting the guy knew enough to preserve the triangle and first aid kit, but a nice thing indeed. I don't have pics yet, I'll get them later, I've already started tearing the car down for service and repair work on the trans and brakes, and took apart some of the front end as well for cleaning out of some debris I found packed up in places that could promote rusting.
