I have an 84 300SD with 79,840 miles, and I am getting exhaust gas in the cabin if any window is down or the sunroof is open while driving along at any speed between 20 mph to 90 mph.
Also at at a stop with any window down I get exaust smell in the car. The smell is burnt exhaust not raw fuel. However, stopped with windows up or moving along with the fan on I dont get any offensive smell. I also is is leaving soot circles al over the car. The GF is fetting very tired of this, always wants to drive the blue 300D or her car now******must fix even at Midas !!!!! Any suggesstions where to start looking for a leak?? And how to repair!!!! Thanks in advance for you assisstance. Steve

Start at the exhaust manifold with the engine running and work your way back towards the tailpipe. Look for soot and feel for puffs of exhaust (don't touch the exhaust system though!
