Question 85 300 TDT Smokes lots when cold

I thought I would start a new thread on this...

My 617 does a LOT of smoking on start up (cold weather this time of year in Colorado especially at 10,000 ft) The smoke is gray/white and it keeps comming until I have driven several miles. It seems to run ok once warm. It seems to start ok even unplugged at -10 to -15 F. My motor has about 250k on it and I don't know what the PO did or did not do.

My qustion:
1) Is this normal? I have not seen other diesels smoke like this. (my friend's 350 SDL hardly smokes at all in the same conditions.) If not what can I do about it?
2) It is probably time for a Diesel purge. Could this have something to do with the smoke? If so where can I get it in the Denver area?

My 85td smokes more than my 77 300d when cold. The smoke seems mainly related to idle and no load conditions. If I put a load on it, the smoke goes away. Mine starts ok in the cold also.
I take some comfort in the fact that my CAT 3208 smokes so bad when cold that I can't start it in the storage lot in cold weather since there is a condo building about 30 yards away and it would completely engulf it in smoke.

Kerry,
Thanks that is reassuring. Do you know a good place to pick up Diesel Purge? I think that might help a little.
