That's a good question, haven't heard from him in a long time.
I subscribe to a lot of his threads and look at them often. Here's a couple more:

Hello again....

I haven't logged on in quite some time. Work and schedule changes have kept me hopping, which limits my time on the PC.

On April 21, 2006, my son was in a traffic collision in Kingsburg, CA. which did several thousand dollars damage to my pristine 300 SD. he was uninjured and the core support/hood/grill/headlamps took most of the beating.

Tuesday, we fired it up and drove it out of the shop after fitting a new MBZ core support and radiator/oil cooler assembly. Still have a few odds and ends to do, but I replaced everything with brand new MBZ parts. I wanted it to look as good as it did before the crash.

Thought this might be of interest to the forum....

Dad could not figure out why the glow plug relay wasn't working. Since the car is not finished yet and there are no headlights in the car, it's rather easy to see everything.

There is a group of brown ground wires near the driver's side headlamps on the core support. These are the grounds for the headlamps....but....one of them is the ground for the glow plug relay.

Hope everyone if healthy and happy...Robert

Robert-

Good to hear from you. Sorry to hear about your son and the W116. I know you will fix it well. Thanks for all your help with my 722.120 transmission . It still shifts fine, but the TC seems to take a few seconds to "pump up" after the car sits for several days ( which it usually does). I wish you could join us here more often.

Rick

Glad you're back.

Your post inspired me to purchase a W116 SD. I'm lovin' it.

Nice to hear the w116 did it's job, and took a beating for your son, instead of the other way around.

Rick,

Your problem can be caused by several things. Of course, a bad torque converter drainback valve is one cause, but most often, the problem is the incorrect, or incorrectly installed filter.

There are two filters for the 722.120 transmission. The one most common is often called the '1-inch neck' filter. It is vital that you have the right one by transmission model number. Most of the ones I see have the wrong filters installed!!!

This allows air to enter the valve body/fluid paths around the filter and aerate the fluid which causes the problem you describe after the vehicle sits for a few days.

Brian,

Thank you very much for the welcome back!!!!

Whiskeydan,

I am so pleased to hear you are happy with your 116!!! I love mine!!!

Dunl,

Indeed...He rear-ended a phone company truck (with a service box on the back and a big, step bumper) that stopped abruptly on the freeway. Although he was able to slow his velocity somewhat before impact (as evidenced by locked-wheel skids) the rear bumper of the truck took out the grille, headlamps, aluminum hood and core support'radiator/condensor/oil cooler.

The CHP officer and I agreed, based on the skid marks, the MBZ was doing approximately 40-45 mph at the time of impact.

Interestingly, the bumper was never touched and the fenders were not bent either!!! My son walked away and the car was not structurally damaged.

After installing a brand new core support from MBZ Fresno, we sent the car out to have it laser-aligned. No bent frame or suspension parts were noted.

I still have to adjust the valves, replace 'O' rings on the turbo inlet housing, service the transmission and replace the lubricant in the rear axle. That's all the car needs mechanically. It only has about 25,000 miles on it since the complete overhaul. But here is the cool part.....

The car sat from April 21, 2006 until July 17, 2007 inside Dad's shop. Once I put a battery in it and correct the bad ground on the glow plug relay, the engine started instantly. No smoke, no shake...just as though it had been shut-off 5 minutes previously. Of course, I treated the fuel to one quart of MMO and some anti-fungal treatment prior to storage, but other than that, no special procedures were taken.

I don't have a scanner right now, so I took some photos of the photos of the wreck. The quality isn't very good, but you can see the damage. I will get them scanned in the near future.

I ordered everything new for this car, including all the metal strips in the grille, the headlamp surrounds, turn signals, core support, hood, grille shell, grille medallion, fan shroud, fan, fan clutch, oil cooler, A/C condenser and everything else I could find that was still available.

Hoping to have it back on the road in a few weeks...Robert
