Front brake drum broke

Two college girls in a tercel pulled out in front of my wagon last night. Caused a little scratch on the front bumper rubber strip. Nothing big.

But when I slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting them the brakes locked and I heard something break from the front driver's wheel well. Turns out my brake drum broke. The plane of the rotor separated from the cylinder that has the lug bolts fit through. So now the rotor turns at will and makes rubbing sounds when driving - the sounds stop when I hit the brakes since its pressing the rotor enough to stop it. Seems scary it would break like this.

Has anyone else ever had a brake drum break like this?
