I can only open my trunk with the key? Shouldn't it open without key if the driver's door is unlocked??

Yes, you should be able to, but I think you have to be watchful of the position of the key. I'll have to look at mine, as I cannot move the trunk lock or glove box with my key. Appears the PO had square after market keys made with the "valet" or "service" key. Also check to make sure the vacuum actuator is working.

only if you have a working vac lock mechanism, in the trunk, and they commonly fail... check the gas door lock for leaks too.

The trunk lock on the 240D has 3 positions. ie, if the key slot is in a vertical position, the trunk is locked at all times, if horizontal, it will work with the driver's door. Turn key counter- clockwise from horizontal to open the trunk. The reasoning behind this is... Valuables in trunk, Valet parking. Turn trunk lock to Vertical, give the parking attendant the VALET key, he can ONLY open the door, and start the engine. The Valet key will not go into the lock. This works with the glove comp lock also. If you want a valet key, and the locksmith doesn't have the blank in stock, tell him a Mazda key blank will work, the tip of the key needs to be filed to the shape of the MB key, copy the MB key on the Cole MZ19 blank, (the locksmith should have a cross reference for different manufacturers' blanks) and now you have both keys. olweasel (retired locksmith, proud owner of a pristine 1979 240D)
