Remember that 240TD

The one from Tx. I got a call today from my indy friend in Fl. The car ended up being shipped to Fl. instead of driven. Pete(the indy) says this thing runs incrediable, swears it will keep up with a 123 300d . The new owner is non other that the guy who sold me my first MB.......I might get a chance at driving this thing in a couple of weeks

There was one in San Francisco for $2000 recently. I can't imagine it being faster than a 300D. 62hp with more weight doesn't add up. Maybe it's because it heaves more when you shift through the gears

I almost bought that one (I'm in Houston), but I thought it would be pretty dang slow. Granted, the 240 with the manual is no incredible slouch, it's still a slouch.

Tell him to post pics - I've been wanted to see that car up close since the CR ad.

A factory OM616 turbo develops around 91bhp, thats more than the n/a OM617, so beating a 300D would not be a hard task for the 240TD.

TD means 'station wagon' not 'turbodiesel'.
Of course putting one of your 616 turbo's in there would be very attractive.

Kerry,

Thanks for the correction, now thats a miracle indeed, a 65bhp machine beating out a 80bhp one considering the weight of both are more or less equal.

Btw, have a PUCH Turbo moped lying in my garage, it originally belonged to my brother when he was in 8th grade, he quickly grew tired of it and graduated to my Yamaha RD350B when I left for the US, the thing looked great and had good pick up for a moped, came with alloys as well. Maybe I will restore it now seeing that you own one as well.

As far as it performing like a 300D, is it the case that the euro 616s are a little faster than the USA version because of emission equipment? I know that is the case with some other vehicles. Still, you'd think a 240D wagon would move like a fat chick in quicksand ... but it would at least look nifty.

i bet a 240td carries a 3.9 rear end. that would help acceleration but not cruising speed or economy.

anybody have a pic of the speedo so we can look at the hash marks?

A 3.9 rear would make life hell in the autobahn.
