I suspect you could undercharge the system with refrigerant to accomplish this but for the life of me I can't understand why?

I've never seen an adjustable expansion valve.

If the compressor is disengaging when it shouldn't, the evaporator low temp cut out switch might be the problem. It is intended to prevent the evaporator from freezing, but they sometimes malfunction and actuate at a much-to-high temperature.

Any idea what model car you are dealing with?

Thanks to JimmyL I now know that we are talking about a 240D. It would be helpful to know what year.

He finally informs us in post #6, but still hasn't updated sig. That ought to be mandatory during the sign up process.....

And how many times to we see multiple models listed in a signature and still have no idea which one is the subject vehicle?

I would start by checking pressures and making sure that you have a correct charge. You can then determine correct pressure switch pressures and check the switches while gauges are connected.

Exactly.
You need to do the basics first before you start throwing parts and money at it.
When everything is working right you wouldn't need to "adjust" the expansion valve.

..
It should also be mandatory to read the sticky's first. Larry, maybe you can edit this one to tell everyone to add info to their signatures.

Unless the car has been modified, the only pressure switch involved is the low pressure cut-off switch. How likely is it that the high pressure side pressure would decrease while the compressor was operating?

However, if the car has been converted to R-134a and a dual acting pressure switch was installed, the described condition could easily be related to the refrigerant level.

even if not upgraded, low pressures could drop coil temps... so charge verification is manditory.
