glow plug relay

I have a 1980 240d and I'm trying to debug the glow plug system. The relay (module) would fail to ignite every now and then, but I could get it going with a sharp rap with the knuckle.

The other day, however, it wouldn't go at all.

I would like to verify that this is the problem. I have seached the forum for diagrams/pinouts but most of the links appear to be broken.

Does anyone know the pin out for the module? The p/n I have is 001 545 35 32.

The pins are labeled: NTC, 15, G on the top row and 31, 50, 30 and LA on the bottom row.

I can tell that G is to the glow plugs, 30 is the Vbat, but what are the rest?

Thanks.

Go to the diesel forum, DIY Articles above or to Dieselgiant.com for info on how to check the GP's and relay.

Just replace it. Mine was doing the same thing. I got a used one from the Parts section for $15.

One suggestion I was given on one of the other forums was to remove the 4 screws that hold it together, and clean the points on the relay inside the module.

Mine had some fairly serious buildup on one side of the points, residue from arcing over the years of operation.

After carefully using a file to clean it off, I've had no more erratic behavior or failure to turn off from mine.

I just suggest this as it costs you nothing, or at least nothing beyond the cost of a file if you don't already have one!

I took the relay out and cleaned it like the previous post and I've had no problems since either. It's easy to get out and clean.
