What the heck is this?

This sits in my trunk, wedged above the fuel tank. It looks like an egg crate. What is it?

Need your car in your signature. But, it is almost certainly your vacuum reservoir.

Pay no attention to the man with the Presidential names. What you speak of is the antiair reservoir. It's the secret to Mercedes-Benz™ longevity, their timeless good-looks too many other wonderous things to list here. Don't open it or you'll release the antiair and then you will be unable to stop your engine or lock your doors.

I'm going to vote for vacuum(AKA anti-air) reservoir... mainly 'cause that's what mine is.

85 300DT, or D/T or D/Turbo.. whatever you want to call it

Anyway... speaking of vacuum.. if I lock and unlock my car more than 3(ish) times without starting it, the other doors stop locking... do I have a vacuum leak or is this all I should expect?

I have one of those in my wagon too, I use it to store loose eggs that I get when I go to the farm.

Seriously though, part of the vacuum system. Lots of cars have 'em, my Vanagon sure did.

Oh so close! Off by one year!
The question is can you lock them at night and unlock them in the morning, or even the day after. If you can you do not have a significant vacuum leak. When you have a real vacuum leak the locks won't work at all after a few minutes even without opening or closing them.

I'm not to sure about that model, but the vac. doors usually work off a seperate pump.

the dashpot is usuall the problem in the system. also check all the lines under the hood (they get the most oil on them, which leads to cracking...)

Yeah, I'm gonna agree. There's 1 vacuum pump on mine. I do not know of a car with 2. Now you can have 2 vacuum reservoirs I think. The second goes in the engine compartment and looks like a coffee can.
