Where exactly is in Trans. Vacuum Modulator?

I'm sure i'll need a replacement vacuum line to the transmission. It looks like it has been broken and capped. It goes down to something that looks like an eyelet near the engine and stops there, short of the transmission.

I can't seem to locate the modulator. I know what it looks like off the car but there is about 20+ years of oil and gunk under there. A pic and a description would be much appreciated if anybody out there has one.

Also, is there a part # for this hose? I'm sure this is my problem and i'm excited to get this thing shifting right for the first time since i've had it. Also, while i'm at it should I order and replace the cap on the modulator? Thanks.

Left side of transmission, just forward of the gear selector, and just above the transmission oil pan. If you slide under the car from just behind the left, front tire, you will be in the right spot.

veg head,

i dont have a pic, but the modulator is green, you cant miss it up there. get under the car and shimmy under the tranny. its up there a little but on the drivers side. youll see the vac line going to it.

when replacing it - its tight in there, it takes some finesse. replace the cap and the o-ring that seal the modulator to the tranny. when removing the modulator be sure TO PULL IT OUT STRAIGHT. dont rock it, theres a little plastic pin that is easy to break.

cap and o ring i think came with my new modulator i got from phil.

i discuss replacing my modulator in the 'its critical' thread -
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=158216&page=13&highlight=critical

i come onto the scene in page 9...

i've read through the "it's critical" post a few times...it definitly gave me a good background to start working...i think i had trouble finding it the other day because there is no vac. line to it and there's a lot of oil under there (rear main seal and i'm not going to worry about that right now) so nothing green caught my eye...the mercedes dealership is an hour away so i might go there after class tomorrow and pick up some vacuum line...i know the "it's critical" article discusses dimensions...is there a certain one i should look for?

Not always. It could be black or red.

Odds are you are going to break the pin no matter how careful you are. Spend the $3 for a new one up front and you won't be in a bind when it does break.

There's only one vac line going from the engine compartment down towards the transmission follow that right to the modulator.
