not knocking on ur setup, but...
i put a "cold air intake" on my 617 as well, however i put a piece of flex pipe from the turbo into a large cone filter. the cone filter sits behind the passenger headlight, it recieve decent airflow there, i plan on eventually running it somewhere towrds the grill on the bottom of the bumper.
the setup on that u are using is not wise!
u have apiece of steel exhaust pipe sitting rite over the turbo. this is going to get ridiculously hot and u have the the potential to melt down that air filter, which well then be sucked through the turbo!
say what u like, but in reality if u are going to do it at all, at least do it right, cutting corners like the one u just cut will not prove to be good ones.
for the oil/air seperator i just put a brether hose filter coming out towards the rear of the valve cover. this has caused no problems due to the fact that i have minimal blowby.

i highly recomend u change ur configuration around, if u enjoy driving that benz!

I would follow the suggestions of others and go back to the OE setup. If needed, go and get the new air cleaner bracket and rubber mounts, and do this mod which will eliminate the need to replace the bracket often.

I was looking over my factory setup and was thinking of water ,they really protected the intake well.The flex tube is the 1st defense ,the ridges take the droplets of water and drops them out the small holes in the slits,the air cleaner has a hole as the 2nd defense ,at the tilted most part of the unit.Then of coarse the filter itself as the 3rd .The designed pieces of these diesels work together and they took the air intake very seriously.The german designers worked very hard to build a long lasting car and to short cut that would make a great design into an average one.Not knocking your setup, just praising the factory one.

Or you can be a cheap buzzard like me... I just cleaned mine up and welded it back together with my MIG welder.......... Been fine for over 5k miles...... Cost, 45 seconds and 3 feet of weld wire! :D (Can't count removal and installation time, have to do that with an new one too......)

If I could find a good paper filter I would replace the cotton one, but a stock filter is not really an option.

Get a new bracket, get 2' of 3/16" steel rod, cut/bend it to follow the underside of the bracket, weld to the bracket, and never have to replace it again. :D
