try this guys , mine works great.

3 inch exhaust pipe and 3 inch cheap(4$) re-useable air filter from ebay. weld/glue in some hose fittings for blow-by oil and you're done!

email with questions....cool turbo whistle audible and no air cleaner clatter! :scholar:

Heh, a while ago, I ran a K&N filter on my 300d in a squeeze for a week, that thing was loud!

the replacement tray and grommets were too expensive for me to justify replacing and that pressed steel aircleaner jumping all over the place (and leaking too) was just too loud to take.

I hate the stock cleaner too but, that's pretty scary, having a plastic aircleaner directly over the turbine housing. When it gets hot and that molten plastic is sucked into your turbocharger, cheap will not be part of the equation.

That oil "separator" looks to be merely a tee, with the majority of the oil being returned via the turbo inlet instead of the drain to the pan.

Depending on the amount of blowby, that may or may not be an issue. The 603 in my SDL has breather that's basically a rubber hose running from the valve cover to the turbo intake. No separator. Appears to be the stock arrangement too.

I have a feeling thats not exactly a wise setup, at the very least direct it away from the turbo housing over behind the headlights or something. The diesel likes cool intake air, warm air from the engine compartment will raise temps. Having it over the turbo is a very bad idea, it gets VERY hot right there.

Those filters don't filter remotely as well as the stock setup either, so you're sucking in lots of dirt/dust/silicates that will shorten the lifespan of the engine and score the cylinder walls, causing a loss of compression. Not worth it at all in my opinion.

There is a separator in the 603, its a series of baffles built into the top inside surface of the cam cover.

Dumb idea, and the price/noise justification lacks a long term view point. It isn't that expensive to secure your original setup, so that excuse appears inaccurate.
I hope you will listen to the advise of the folks above. You aren't filtering near as well anymore, and you are injesting much hotter air.

I just bought a pack of 4 "off-road duty" rubber filter mounts from a local foreign car parts place for $10, and got a "OEM quality" sheetmetal mounting bracket on eBay for $16 plus $12.50 shipping. Haven't got it in yet, but seller has 100% positive feedback and has lots of cool MB stuff. The seller had 250 of these brackets at the listed price, the auction went off last night. They go by "benzdepotcom". If this works, then I should be in good shape for less than $40.

I had just completed this fix on an 84 ,the air cleaner bracket was broken and needed a weld to fix,after all was said and done I was out 7.50 for the new rubber air cleaner mounts and a six pack for the welded bracket.I like the setup that original came but your the owner not us.If you mounted a different section and got that filter to the front you would be better off.

I wondered about that. Learn something new every day....

Cant wait to get that setup ! I also cant wait to run through a puddle !
