'82 SD, Differential replacement

As per another thread, I snapped my driveshaft. It seems I have a differential issue that probably caused the driveshaft to snap at the weld.

So, what differentials can I use that will be the same ratio and bolt right in?

Second - who has one that can go right in with no fixing required, and how much shipped to zip 49085?

All 300SD Differentials up to 1984 and 1982-1984 300D/TD Turbo should bolt right up without any mods - 3.07 ratio.

I did a swap here.

Is yours not differentiating? It would be the first such failure that I've heard of, but I'm sure it could happen. I'm interested in seeing pictures of the innards.

The inards are making all kinds of neat noises as one wheel is rotated. Te wheel on the other side rotates a few inches and locks up. If I rotate it back and forth real hard, it will let loose and also make noises.

Have never been in a MB dif before, but I am guessing one of the side gears is broken, a gear shaft broke, the pin came out, or something on that order.

My brother works for a dismantler. He found an entire rear subframe from an SD for me.

So, now I'll have extra shafts, calipers, rotors, and the subframe itself - anybody need anything?

I haven't picked the frame up yet - I just found out about it this afternoon. I'll let you know when I get it. My kid is supposed to get one of his friends that has a pick up to drive to Blue Island and pick it up.

They are yours if they are decent. I would not send anything that I would not use myself. Shoot me PM on whereabouts you need them shipped, and what you think they are worth shipped. To be honest, I got the subframe complete dirt cheap. We'll discuss PM.

If the calipers are in good shape I might want them so I have an extra set. I could come down to get them, no need for shipping. (probably would be $$$ to ship them...that'd be like 35-40lbs....)

Well, it wasn't a complete subframe. There's subframe parts there, along with two half-half shafts hanging from the dif cut off via junkyard torch, but the only usable part is the dif.

Sorry everybody. I tried!

My bro says it is amazing how much money junkyards throw away by cutting up perfectly good parts. It was in his computer as a subframe complete. He says when a car first comes in, they remove the lugnuts, throw them away, get the forktruck, stick it through the windows, and shake the wheels off. He says he's seen them ruin expensive donk wheels, AMG wheels, etc, as the wheels hit the ground and anything else that's on the ground in a junkyard.

Maybe I should get into the junkyard business.

All back together.

Started with the driveshaft weldment at the middle spline snapping. Found the rear end making noise. Found another pumpkin. When taking everything apart, found all 4 CV Homokinetic joints shot. Just touching them cracked them through - oil poured out.

Pull evrything out. Found one of the spider gears snapped in half. That's what started this entire ordeal.

Ordered 2 new homekinetic joint covers and 4 boots. Cut the inner homokinetic joint covers off. Discover the homokinetic joint covers are different, outer and inner. Also discover inner homokinteic covers are no longer available!

Aha - but I have the undamaged half half-shafts from the junkyard dif. So, my kid takes it to M-tec, and turns down the homokinetic joint cover seams to seperate them, so he can TIG weld them on the original shafts from the car.

The kid does good - takes them to work, disassembles completely. The balls and the ball races are in perfect shape after 25 years and over 210,000 miles. Never saw the inside of one of these joints. Assembles everything, and TIG welds the homokinetic covers together. Fills everything with new special grease that came with the boots.

He gets it all put together, and runs like a champ.

That night, he visits his girlfriend. One of her girlfriends is there, in the driveway, with her bigass F truck. Kid parks the car, gets out, the girl in the truck throws it into reverse, and puts the bumper through the grill, bends the condenser fan into the condenser into the radiator, cracking open the radiator so it leaks pretty good.

AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could kill. Well, not really, but her insurance company - STATE FARM, is really pissin me off now. My insurance says I'll have to take the girl and her parents to small claims if I want to settle this. I am hoping my kid can convince her parents this is not the way to do things.

Anyway, we pulled everything back towards the front of the car. Two big bottles of bars leaks gets the radiator sealed until I ccn get this settled. It is seperated at the top seam.

I went on eBay - new Behr radiator, new condenser, new condenser fan, and new grill about 500 bucks. Didn't buy anything yet. Put some feelers out for used stuff. And I have to straighten out the body metal that the upper radiator clips into. The hood opens and closes fine, but this body piece is bent in the middle. I'll have to wait for the girl and her parents reaction to taking responsibility for wrecking my beast.

Anyway - that's my story of my 25 year old diesel that I now have a new passion for keeping it running for another 25 years.
