I Need Help

Ok so I am driving my 1985 300D Turbo today and when I go to turn off my car it keeps running and the battery light comes and stays on. I try several times to turn it off and eventually it dies... as in sounds slower and slower until the engines dies. It starts up again fine I drive back to work and it turns off ok but with a little hesitation like it is going to just keep running again with key in off position. Has anyone experienced this sort of thing and knows what it could be ? Is it meaning that the battery is going bad, the alternator needs replacing, the ignition has a problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tony

Check for a vacuum leak under the hood. You can also shut down by pressing the tab marked STOP under the hood.

Diesels stop running when either fuel or air is restricted.

It's a vacuum problem. Either the vacuum shut off valve has failed or (more likely)there's a vacuum leak somewhere else in the system. Use a MityVac to pull a vacuum on the shut off valve and see if it holds. If it does there is a vacuum leak somewhere else.

Is there a diagram on how to pull a vacuum on the shut off valve. And if it holds vacuum how do I find where else the leak may be >

That is where the mity vac comes in.

You pull or disconnect one vacuum consumer at a time and test.

Under the hood, the yellow is for the locking system, green is the HVAC, brown is the shut off valve, black runs to the transmission, at least on the w123.

Search this forum and you will see lots of info on chasing vacuum issues.

Shut off valve is on the back of the IP. Pull off the vacuum line, replace with the MityVac line and pump it up.

If the engine stops running, the shut off valve is good.

So with engine running if I pull the brown line and the engine stops running the shut off is good and problem is elsewhere ?

You have to hook the mitiy vac up to the shut off valve and pump it. As the vacuum is created, the engine should stop.

You could also put a line on the shut off and suck on it in place of the Mity Vac. Three or four good sucks should shut the engine down.
