Aux coolant pump doesn't work

Well, I don't think it does. I unplugged it and connected it directly to 12v. Nothing happens. I connected the leads both ways, nothing. The resistance across the pump is about 3.5 ohms. Anyone know what its supposed to be?
What prompted this is the temp gauge would climb a little at rest or driving slowly (I know this may not be the aux pump, but I mention it anyway), and the heat kiss arse on the highway but is so-so in town.

So can you rebuild these pumps or am I stuck getting a new one?
Thanks,
-Geoff

Pizza

If there is resistance across the motor terminals, the rotor may be stuck.

Take it apart and see what is wrong with it. Its also possible that the motor is burned out from the rotor being stuck.

I just measured a brand new pump and got 20 ohms between the leads, I assume that's correct. I don't know if they can be rebuilt, but I'm sure someone here has tried.

I doubt the pump will affect engine temperature, but it will definitely explain the lack of low rpm heat.

Pizza,

Comparing your resistance reading to Craigs reading on a new pump, I think your motor is burned out and U will have to replace pump. Seems like I saw them for about $135.

One more thing, did the terminals spark when U connected the motor terminals to 12 volts?

I picked up a spare at Pull and Save for a couple of dollars. I read somewhere that they can be disassembled and freed up.

I did get a small spark at the battery post when I touched the wire there (I had jumpers with aligator clips on the pump electrical connection).

The first time I check resistance, it was around 18 ohms. Then I tried running it a few times, then checked resistance again, and that's when I got the 3.5 ohms.

Nice rehab tutorial. I'll have to save that for a day when I don't need the car for a little while.

Or maybe I'll look for a used one. Thanks for the help all...if all else fails, I'll hit you up for that one you found Craig. Thanks.
