Has anyone replaced the cigar hose with a regular hose? What does the cigar hose do and when does it need replacing? I am wondering if it has something to do with the engine shaking at idle, which seems to be worse in hot weather.

Yes you can put a straight hose on. Two thing can happen. Nothing, or you'll get a pulsing noise and possibly shakey idle. I have experienced both. On my wagon there is a pulsing noise and some vibration when I have straight hose on, and not when I have a cigar hose. In my 240 there was no change. If you have the pulsing it's not hurting anything it's just noise.

I've replaced with a regular fuel hose on a 300T, haven't noticed a difference. Supposed to suppress "shock" of fuel from backing up at idle.

Most people who have replaced it with straight fuel line say they do not notice any difference. A few have said they could feel or hear the fuel pulses in the hose. Someone suggested splicing in a prefilter as kind of a shock absorber. That seems like it would work, although I don't think we have had any reports from someone who actually tried it.

My 409d had a hose with a filter in the place of the cigar hose (if it had one originally??). Seemed to work fine.

That's seems like it would be far more trouble than it is worth.

the hose on my 240d is replaced with a straight viton hose and i noticed no effect whatsoever. the idle was never exactly glass-smooth anyway, though, so ymmv.

The cigar hose isn't that expensive...

Yep, I agree. A new cigar hose is only 11 bucks, but some people would rather find the cheapest alternative.

Available from here http://*************** $11.00 plus shipping. A two foot fuel hose from any parts store might run a dollar. And you don't have to wait on it. I do, however have cigar hoses on the CD and SD, with a spare in the garage.

does the w124 have this type of hose?

it currently has a normal fuel line on it.

I am trying to find a cure for the shaky idle, which coincides with the pulsation of the cigar hose, not to save 11 bucks and also I do not want replace it if not necessary. This hose goes bwtween the IP return and tank. I suppose its job is to absorb the return fuel pressure from the IP? Why is this hose needed? I have not seen anything like it on other diesels. I was hoping it may have an effect on the idle. What I'll do is replace it with a polyurethane hose, which is a clear yellowish soft hose, and see if the idle smooths out. If it does, I'll order a cigar hose.
