Could be metal to metal. Warrants removing the wheel and caliper for a look.

So how do i do that? Step by step would work great Its only when i am going at a decent speed and then come to a more sudden stop.

Does the car pull? Could be a pebble caught in the caliper. Please give all the info you can.

I have a 1985 300td Mercedes Diesel. No pull. I have heard it may be dirt/gravel or something.

Anything loose in the suspension would cause a noise, I'm thinking it might be the guide rod and or bushing, possible ball joint problem

It might be. I have had the car for two years now and it really belongs to my dad who is too cheap to actually buy me a car that i wouldn't feel so guilty for when it gets broke. Anyway why is it ONLY on the left side? It vibrates a little and literally sounds like a crunch but then stops when the car has come to complete stop. Whatever it is is coming from somewhere very close to the left door.

Sounds like a guide rod. Check for rust also. My 82 is down waiting on parts. The left wheel bearinng decided to crap out. Also on investicgation, the bearing race had what appears to be a mfg defect. What I thought was a gouge is actually a low spot from poor casting turning and polishing...
